24.03.2026
The ‘Europe Without Barriers’ think tank hosted an online expert discussion entitled ‘Ukraine’s path to Schengen: what needs to change internally to facilitate external integration’, marking the start of Ukraine’s preparations for implementing the Schengen acquis. The event was attended by representatives of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the State Customs Service, experts and representatives of civil society.

Vasyl Panasyuk, Head of the Main Centre for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration at the State Border Guard Service, reported that Ukraine has already received a positive assessment from the European Commission regarding its approach to preparations: “The European Commission has noted positively that we are currently the only candidate country that is handling this process correctly. Our country has embarked on the right process, and it will include the development of a national Schengen strategy and an action plan regarding the Schengen Agreement.”
